Olympic National Forest

My birthday happens to fall on August 26th and years ago I celebrated it while on an extended tour in British Columbia with my dad. Nearing my 32nd birthday I decided to celebrate by taking an extended ride up around the Olympic Peninsula with a stop in Seattle to celebrate the union of two good friends of mine at their wedding.

The plan was to bail out of Portland right after work on a Friday and get as far up into the Peninsula as I could before nightfall. Luckily my work day ended at 2:30 which gave me a few extra hours of daylight. I may have also forgotten about a time change or something because I was on the road by 1:00. Eh, work will understand.

Horseshoe Lake, Oregon

I am an absolute sucker for Highway 224 out of Clackamas, OR. I could ride it back and forth for days on end. It's the gateway to the Mt. Hood National Forest and its endless backroads. This particular trip I'd realized I was riding around on a new set of Metzlers that hadn't been put through their paces on dirt yet.

Mostly I just wanted to go get lost.

Don't call it a comeback.

The KLR in 2006
Years ago I had a grand vision of recording and relaying the trips I took by motorcycle throughout the great northwest. Well, maybe not a grand vision, but certainly an enjoyable task. There are so many great places to travel by bike that it's hard not to share with others. I think most great places I've ridden have been because someone told me where to go, or recommended a route to me.

So here I am again. Back after so many years, ready to give it another go.  I'll begin with the most notable trip I took up through British Columbia back in 2003. It's an archived blog I wrote at the time, posted in it's original form (soooo that means it's not edited by my older, wiser, self...  Sorry in advance). And soon to come will be many more rides I've been on since.

So kick back and enjoy. With any luck you'll find yourself a new place to ride yourself!

Detroit Lake Loop from Portland

If you're a motorcyclist and live in the Portland area then you should already know that 224 out through Estacada is your bread n' butter. Not but a few miles beyond Clackamas and you're out in some of the most beautiful roadways the Mt Hood National Forest has to offer. I like to hit this area up for all of my summertime after-work rides.

Yamhill Lavender Festival and Joan Jett in Lincoln City

I'ma be real for a moment and profess my love of Lavender. Yup. I said it. Lavender Festivals and Dualsports go together like bees and flowers. Don't believe me? Well think about it. Most lavender farms are located in rural areas which are often low traffic, smooth roads, and high scenery value. The farms themselves will convert unused fields to parking lots which is where the dualsport comes in. Streetbikes and irrigation fields do not go well together...

Try it out sometime. Find a local lavender fest and pick out a good route to several farms. It'll likely take you into unexplored countryside and each stop will probably have ice cream or at least chocolates.

Astoria Loop from Portland Via Neskowin

This particular loop makes for an awesome day trip out of Portland. It's definitely geared towards the street bikes but a seasoned dualsport rider wont have too much trouble keeping up with the crotch rockets through the curves.
